Digital Society School - Safe Space Toolbox

A digital and physical toolkit designed to support inclusive collaboration and empower marginalized communities.

Overview

Built during my internship at Digital Society School with Society Fresh — a toolkit and platform to help policymakers and facilitators run more inclusive collaboration sessions.

Digital platform meets physical card games, all aimed at making participation more accessible for marginalized groups.

My role

Designer within a multidisciplinary team — digital platform and visual systems.

  • Designed and prototyped the platform from early concepts to high-fidelity flows
  • Created a visual styleguide for consistency across team outputs
  • Researched existing platforms and translated insights into design decisions
  • Iterated through user testing, peer reviews, and stakeholder feedback
  • Maintained project documentation via WordPress

Process

We kicked off with research — analyzing forums and NGO tools to understand how people share experiences online. That shaped the concept direction and helped us focus on what would actually be useful.

I led the design in Figma, moving from lo-fi sketches to interactive prototypes. Each round of testing — with trainees, stakeholders, and the client — pushed the design further.

A key shift: the original toolbox was too rigid. We pivoted to a flexible system where users generate their own tailored outcomes instead. Better for the user, better for the product.

Result

A working prototype backed by a solid visual system and physical tools — delivered to the partner as a concept ready for further development.

Looking back, I'd simplify certain flows earlier. We explored some complex ideas that got cut after testing anyway — but that iteration taught me a lot about working with multiple stakeholders and staying flexible.
